Lucky for us we don’t have to apply to Oxford University to study the art of online bingo, we can learn it from the University of Life. The institution, which is the second oldest surviving University in the world, has recently received a ‘whimsical’ rejection letter from a bewildered student outlining the reasons why she does NOT want to study one of their infamous courses.
Elly Nowell, 19 from Hampshire, United Kingdom attended an interview to study jurisprudence, the theory and philosophy behind law but claimed that the top class university did not “meet the standards” of other universities.Whilst most students would kill to be studying at such an institution the hard to please teen has opted to study at City University in London instead.
In her rejection letter she says that she felt like the “only atheist in a Monastery” and slammed the establishment for a class divide between public and private schools. She mocked the standard rejection letter used by most Universities and began “you may be disappointed by this decision…but you were in competition with many other fantastic Universities” and left the superior institute gobsmacked.
Whilst Nowell claims that the University allows public school applicants to thrive and intimidates state school applicants the University insists that six out of seven students awarded a place on a law course at Oxford were from State schools.
The budding lawyer has now received media attention from National Newspapers and the BBC and has put the spotlight on the University for possible class divides within the historic institute. Nowell says she only realised at the interview how crazy the idea of studying at Oxford would be and she did not want to subject herself to such judgement and scrutiny, she goes as far as to admit that she spent most of her time “laughing” at how seriously everything was taken.
Figures show that over half of Oxford students are from private schools and although a percentage of comprehensive school students are accepted it has been reported by past students that they struggle to fit into the environment. During a time of economic strife and with the dramatic increase of tuition fees for normal universities it is feared that the access to education will be reserved for those who can fund it and not necessarily deserve it.
Regardless, in 2011 Oxford received over 17,000 applications from hopeful students but had only 3,000 places to fill. Whilst most applicants are left dejected about not going to such a well-known institute Elly Nowell is one of the only students in the world who is openly happy about the matter.
Tuition fees have now hit £9,000 in most middle class universities so the hopes of Oxford are dashed for many students. Perhaps it’s time for them to play some online bingo and try and win their tuition fees? Or perhaps it’s time for the UK Government to enforce cuts elsewhere at the other end of the pay scale and not neglect education for the next generation.
