Will Scotland Become Independent from the UK?

With SNP leader Alex Salmond receiving an overall majority Government in Scotland in May 2011 – there has become a looming question as to whether Scotland would like to be independent from Britain or not.With the promise of a referendum in the latter part of his 4 years in power – it is a subject that will definitely need to be addressed fairly soon.It has sparked controversy not only in the Scottish Parliament but at Westminster, with David Cameron strongly opposing an independent Scotland and promoting a unionist view.His unlikely ally has been Labour Leader Ed Milliband also agreeing that the country should remain united.(Who thought those two would join forces).

Scotland already has devolved powers giving them control over matters such as health and education but is this enough for the people of Scotland?Recent YouGov polls have suggested that there has been a rise in support for an independent Scotland with 33% backing the idea, 53% against and 14% are still undecided.England and Wales were also included in another poll and 33% of them supported the idea of Scotland becoming an independent country.With increasing popularity of the idea – it’s safe to say that it could become a possibility at some point in the future.

Although First Minister Alex Salmond has never shied away from his view that he would love nothing more than for Scotland to be in complete control over its own destiny – the question that has arisen lately is why is it taking him so long to do something about it?The Labour leader Johann Lamont has accused the SNP leader of being “frightened” of bringing the referendum forward.Of course Scottish Labour has completely unionist views arguing that leaving the United Kingdom will not solve all of Scotland’s problems.Whatever the rival politicians say ultimately the people will have their voices heard, however who knows what the outcome will be.

One thing is for sure – this has been a long time coming.Scotland have always had aspects of their culture that they wanted to remain separate in order to create an identity such as TV channels STV and BBC Scotland, their own fizzy pop (Irn Bru), their trademark kilts and shortbread and even their own online bingo site – Bingo Scotland.What we need to think of though – is what would an independent Scotland look like?How would this change the rest of the UK?Even if it is decided that Scotland move away from the rest of the UK – it would surely take years of preparation to ensure that everything ran smoothly.Alex Salmond has clearly created quite the impression with the people of Scotland but only time will tell if it will be quite enough to convince them that an independent Scotland is good for their future.
