Despite the economic climate, the Rank group, owners of Mecca Bingo has published their third quarter reports to reveal an increase in profit compared to the same period last year. Mecca’s increase in profit, while only 3%, is still impressive considering the financial crisis, and the problems land based bingo operators are facing this year, including the smoking ban and the bingo tax increase led by the treasury.
Apparently, Mecca’s biggest success is not only from online activity – they are introducing a new concept to their land based halls – The Full House Club – which has showed great success in their Beeston club. The concept is offering a more contemporary bingo experience, with food and beverages served and are attracting a younger audience as well as the classic crowd. The Beeston crowd is said to attract 5400 visitors weekly, as opposed to 6000 visitors in all three of rival Gala Bingo clubs in the area.
As opposed to Gala Bingo, who has been closing many land based halls in the last year trying to shift focus to online activity, Mecca shows that land based bingo halls are still kicking, even with all the recent problems the industry is suffering.
