Yes you might be shocked to see the words Cambridge and Katie Price put together- unless it was another book signing or publicity stunt but no this was actually an intellectual gathering. The glamour model took on Boris Johnson’s sister, Rachel Johnson, who was Oxford educated and is the editor-in-chief of The Lady magazine. What was the motion they were debating? ‘The only limit to female success is female ambition’- although a lot of the discussion during the evening did end up being centred on Price’s personal life.
Papers everywhere went crazy about the fact this page 3 girl managed to outsmart such a well-educated woman (Katie herself did not even leave school with GCSEs) in such a high brow debate. However, the 10 minute speech that Katie presented against the motion was not exactly outstanding she mumbled and swore her way through most of it. This is due to her admitting she wasn’t a very good public speaker and with the 600 student spectators this is understandable. However Johnson’s performance wasn’t that impressive either with most of her speech aimed at making bitchy digs at the glamour model. For example, she uttered ‘The sky is the limit’ – and then turned to Katie Price and added: ‘Or in your case, a ten-part series on Sky called “Katie”.
Katie Price won the debate with 497 votes to 39 and students said they voted for Katie Price because her performance was more down to earth and her argument more inspirational. However with such a motion being pretty impossible not to win and with help from really eloquent speeches from her fellow debating team Charlotte Vere and Anna Stansbury it seems it wasn’t really Katie’s wit and knowledge that swayed it. She may have been popular but her intelligence wasn’t as impressive as the papers have made out. Although we love to slate this publicity mad woman perhaps everyone would love her to be a feminist public icon. It would be a nice change to realize there was an impressive brain under all that fake tan and make up- which is perhaps why the papers went to so crazy about the win.
So what are your thoughts on feminism? Does Katie Price represent the modern woman battling in a man’s world? Or are her racy photo shoots degrading to women all over the world? Whatever your opinion you can’t deny Price’s actions have made her millions and this is part of the reason she was invited to the debate by the Union president in the first place!
