The premier of the acclaimed film starring Meryl Streep as the controversial political figure, Margaret Thatcher has received considerable attention from film critics recently. Regardless of political preference I think it is fair to say that Meryl Streep was outstanding in her performance of the first female Prime Minister whose debatable policies still cause a stir in the UK today. The film, Iron Lady, named after Thatcher’s nickname given to her by the Russian media for her often harsh decisions on spending cuts has already been tipped to clear up in the Oscars. If you haven’t seen it, it is definitely worth dragging yourself away from those free bingo games that became so popular last year and treating yourself to a night at the flicks and a lovely box of popcorn. Treat yourselves ladies!
Critics have quite rightly pronounced that Meryl Streep’s vivid performance will allow her an Oscar nomination alongside Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn, depicting the life of Marilyn Monroe and Tilda Swinton in We need to Talk about Kevin. These of course are just predictions and the actual nominations are months away, though if these are the standards of cinema in 2012 then we’re in for a treat.
Our average evening is spent in front of the box watching Eastenders and Coronation Street; guessing the next romantic move of Ian Beale, not quite a celebrity lifestyle. This year sets to be an exciting year for new film releases so make sure you brave the elements and venture out of your comfortable home to catch the releases everyone is talking about.
This week saw the premier of War Horse, it was enough to turn William, our favourite King to be’s blushing bride Kate Middleton to tears. The film, depicting the life of a veteran horse in WWII is predicted to be a key contender for Best Picture at the Oscars. Up against Midnight in Paris and black and white creative flick The Artist it also holds strong competition, especially considering the movies that are currently in production that will surely be a candidate for awards of 2012.
One film to look forward to this year is very a twisted fairy-tale, Snow White and the Huntsman starring the beautiful Charlize Theron which is released this summer, there is also The Great Gatsby starring the one and only Leonardo Dicaprio released in December and Cloud Atlas, the movie depiction of David Mitchell’s popular novel starring the acclaimed actor that is Tom Hanks released in October. This is just the tip of the iceberg; there are big budget movies and small arty films set for for you to look forward to throughout the year so this might be the time to get your hands on one of those unlimited cinema cards that are advertised.
Cinema buffs will already be there, for the rest of us it’s time to forget about the gloomy weather outside and treat our other halves to a trip to the cinema to see a film they will probably hate, that is what they‘re there for after all. TV and free bingo games will always be your friend and the winnings will be there for you when you get home, but watching a great movie on a big cinema screen doesn’t happen quite as often.
