Bingo Hall Expansions in 2013
Monday, 18 March 2013 | Written by Carol Dian
Bingo halls have long been a source for sob stories and plenty of sympathy in recent years. These halls have become ‘the little guy’ in UK gambling, with lots of them squeezed out of business due to rising operating costs. The biggest culprit is the government, which forces bingo halls to pay a higher rate of tax than all other forms of gambling. However, amid the struggles there are still positive stories to be found for the bingo halls. Recently we have brought you stories of how Mecca halls have managed to perform strongly amid the turmoil, so there is still enthusiasm there from the general public. However, now we want to shift our gaze to positive news on new bingo halls as well as revamps to existing ones.
Mecca Completes £200k Upgrade in March
We have only just mentioned Mecca Bingo so might as well stick with them. Mecca Bingo has only just completed a £200,000 revamp this month of one of its existing bingo halls. Players that attend the Mecca hall in Greenock in Scotland will be delighted by the exciting upgrade to their beloved hall. Mecca hosted a special party to mark the re-opening of the hall, with all of its loyal players invited to attend. There have been lots of lovely changes to the hall, with a complete overhaul undertaken to make it look more stylish. Mecca has fitted new carpets and changed the décor, also adding a food menu for hungry players.
New Hall Planned for Sunderland
The next story takes us south of the border and down to Sunderland. Just this month it was announced that initial plans for a brand new bingo hall for the city. A printing company has finally seen their efforts come to fruition, having acquired the site after taking it off a failed supermarket. The move of Edward Thompson makes complete sense because they offer their service to the global bingo industry, creating daubers and cards. Edward Thompson intends to see through the hard work of getting it developed and will then sell it on to one of their clients. When the bingo hall is finally complete it is expected to be a huge bingo bonus for the local community.
New Hall Opens in the US
It appears that there is even good news for halls from across the pond, which is great because we do need to keep this form of the game alive, although online bingo is a very worthy successor. Hobson City, Alabama, has just seen the opening of a new hall in March, which has brought great hope for the economy of the local community. The people are hoping that Hobson City can recapture its better days before the previous hall burned down. Paper-based bingo is legal in Hobson City, but unfortunately online bingo isn’t. Players can now get together and socialise at their new hall and enjoy the community spirit. Lastly, the tax revenue will help the county to improve infrastructure and develop vital social schemes.
