The Rise of the “Dorky” Celebrities!

Online bingo and TV tend to go hand-in-hand.How many times have you sat at your computer or laptop with 1 eye on the bingo balls and 1 eye on Eastenders?Bingo fans are usually massive fans of celebrity culture.There was a time when the term “celebrity” encompassed just those who entertained us for a living.Actors and singers, mainly, but dancers, presenters, sports stars and even those just famous by association – note the Osbourne offspring, Elizabeth “Hugh Grant’s girlfriend” Hurley and, of course, Paris Hilton.But there is a new string of celebrity emerging, and this lot have actually GOT a brain!Harsh words, but when you look at the likes of notoriously “dumb” Jessica Simpson, David Beckham and even president George Bush, you can see we have a point!Well stand aside, ditsy crew, because we are currently seeing a rise in a far cleverer breed of celebrity!

The likes of David Attenborough – who brought us such clever-clogs TV as Life on Earth, The Living Planet, The Private Life of Plants, The Life of Mammals and the amazingly popular Frozen Planet – has been educating us humble folks since as early as 1971 and has won a place in the nations heart ever since.Stephen Fry is another “geeky” famous face who has written countless books and brought us the likes of Last Chance to See and Horrible Histories in an attempt to broaden the mind of the average telly addict.These were the 2 best known celebrity intellectuals, and it wasn’t until relative youngster Brian Cox hit our screens in 2011 with Wonders of the Universe that British TV fans really started to take an interest in more than the latest escapades of Pat Butcher!Physicist Brian Cox appeared in many a BBC program before the Wonders of the Universe – What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity and Can We Make a Star on Earth to name a few – but it was only after this amazingly interesting documentary hit the Prime Time that Brian Cox has become a household name and has since been named as the 11th most “Influential Man in Britain”!

Don’t get me wrong – I love a bit of trash-TV as much as the next person, but it would appear that British tastes are certainly becoming more refined and our TV mashed brains are crying out for some intellectual juice; you only have to look at the phenomenal success of Frozen Planet to see the truth in these statements.This new thirst for knowledge and appreciation for a completely fresh and more interesting wave of TV programs has certainly paved the way for more and more clever celebrities bent on showing us just how intellectual they are.Take Colin Firth for instance, who has very recently co-written an article for ‘Current Biology’!

I am in no way suggesting that we stop in the middle of a bingo game to concentrate on the latest documentary, but I think the UK as a whole could greatly benefit from the fruits of the new generation of clever celebrities’ labour!

• 2012-01-27 | angie: Haha I love this article- too true, I do really like Big Brother and stuff but watching frozen planet showed me what actual good tv was- plus with bingo you can play and watch you don't have to stop just take a break every now and again or try the pre-buy cards where you can win without being online- defo going to do that for the bingo cove valentines game!
